Browser Hints

This page aims to provide some handy hints for viewing my pages, and also for using Netscape and Internet Explorer.

  1. With apologies to Netscape users, my website is designed with Microsoft FrontPage and looks best when viewed in Internet Explorer. I have used some features which are unsupported by Netscape in this website. I recommend Internet Explorer 4 or higher as the preferred Web Browser.
  2. This website (especially the picture pages) are best viewed in AT LEAST 800x600 resolution and 32K colors or higher. Most, if not all pictures are in 16.7M colors and are 640x480 resolution. Also, I recommend the fullscreen option in Internet Explorer 4 and to hide all the taskbars in Netscape Communicator for best viewing of the picture pages.
  3. The front page of this site uses JAVA applets. I have noticed that under Windows 3.x neither Netscape or Internet Explorer support JAVA very well. This results in very slow responses from the PC. I advise people who use Windows 3.x to turn JAVA off in their browser for better performance.
  4. If any of the pages are missing pictures or applets, try reloading the page by holding the SHIFT key and then clicking the reload button. This forces your PC to load the page from the internet rather than use the cached copy stored either on your hdd or in the proxy server of your ISP. This will work for any page which you may choose to view, whether on my site or not.
  5. The Crescendo Midi Plug-in is only available for Netscape and Internet Explorer on Windows 95 and Netscape on Windows 3.x. Internet Explorer on Windows 3.x is not supported. The Windows 3.x version of Crescendo does not support some of the functions of the Windows 95 version, most notably the floating window. If you do not have the plug-in Internet Explorer in Windows 95 will automatically attempt to download it and ask if you want to install it. Netscape in Windows 95 and Windows 3.x will ask if you want to go to the download page and get it.
  6. I have made use of the <FONT> tag in my pages. However, this requires you to have the fonts I have used installed in your copy of Windows (3.x or 95). I will place a .zip file of all the fonts used on my site here. Please download the file and install the fonts to view my pages as they were designed. Without the fonts your browser will use it's default font (normally Times Roman) to display any text which you don't have the correct font for.
  7. I am now using frames in this site. I will be making all the picture pages open a new browser window for better viewing. Until then you can right-click in the right hand frame and select "Open frame in new window" to see the picture without having to scroll.
